Joseph is a family law litigator with trial experience in high-stakes international child abduction and cross-border relocation matters.
Within six months of his practice, Joseph successfully conducted a Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction trial, securing the published decision of LY v RY, 2024 ABKB 209 (CanLII). This case also led to a successful costs decision in LY v RY, 2025 ABKB 12 (CanLII), and his designation as a recommended junior counsel by the Central Authority of Alberta for international child abduction cases. He also secured a favorable ruling in the international relocation trial of VTM v RTM, 2025 ABKB 89 (CanLII), and successfully obtained the annulment of an international marriage, demonstrating his experience in cross-border family law disputes.
Joseph’s practice is built on a dual approach to family law—prioritizing resolution whenever possible while being fully prepared to advocate in court when necessary. He does not litigate for the sake of litigating, instead approaching mediation and settlement discussions with a solutions-focused mindset. Although Joseph has a growing court-focused practice, he believes that a vast majority of family law cases can and should be settled outside of court.
Joseph’s experience extends beyond traditional family law matters into complex and niche disputes. He has successfully appeared before Urgent Matters Chambers to obtain a Mareva Injunction (Freezing Order) against cryptocurrency and financial assets. He has also drafted pleadings for the forced sale of a family-owned private business under the Arbitration Act. Before focusing exclusively on family law, Joseph gained corporate-commercial legal experience in the in-house legal department of a medical technology company, where he assisted with cross-border contracts, software licensing agreements, and the acquisition of the company by a private equity firm.
Joseph completed his articles at a distinguished boutique family law firm. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (2022) and a Bachelor of Science in Statistics (with Distinction) from the University of Calgary (2019). During law school, he represented the University of Toronto in the National Walsh Family Law Moot and completed a child-welfare research practicum.
