Joseph Mercado is a family lawyer who was called to the Alberta Bar in 2023. He graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2022 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Statistics (with Distinction) from the University of Calgary (2019).
Joseph completed his articles at a distinguished boutique law firm specializing in divorce and family law, where he assisted on a wide range of cases, from standard family matters to complex and specialized issues. In addition to working on matters of parenting, support, and property division, Joseph has appeared at Urgent Matters Chambers to obtain a Mareva Injunction (Freezing Order) against bank and cryptocurrency assets, drafted pleadings for the forced sale of a family business through a successful application under the Arbitration Act, and assisted counsel in a Hague Convention matter on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.
Within just six months of beginning his practice as a family lawyer, Joseph successfully conducted a trial at the Alberta Court of King’s Bench on an international child abduction case, resulting in the published decision of L.Y. v. R.Y., 2024 ABKB 209 (CanLII).
While Joseph is prepared to advocate for his clients in court, he prioritizes resolving matters outside of litigation whenever possible. He believes family law issues are best resolved when consensus is encouraged between parties and clients are fully educated about the law and legal processes.
Before focusing on family law, Joseph worked in corporate-commercial law at the in-house legal department of a medical technology company. His work involved software licensing agreements, cross-border sale contracts, and due diligence for the company’s acquisition by a private equity firm. This role allowed him to blend his legal skills with his background in data science, before he eventually chose to pivot to family law to work more closely with individuals and families.
During law school, Joseph represented the University of Toronto at the National Walsh Family Law Moot Competition, completed a child-welfare research practicum, and took courses in Family Law and Advanced Family Law. These experiences deepened his interest in family law and strengthened his commitment to providing clients with clear, informed guidance throughout their cases.
