Zolani Ncube Jennings Family Law

Zolani was born in Zimbabwe and spent her childhood moving around the world as the child of a diplomat. As a natural-born advocate, who values diversity and equity for marginalized groups, she pursued her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at the University of Cape Town and later, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Washington College of Law at American University, with a specialization in International Human Rights and Gender.

While working as a Judicial Clerk with the Alberta Court of Appeal, Zolani was drawn to family law due to the delicate balancing of legal argument with the infusion of human emotions that characterizes many cases. She decided to complete her articles with an established family law boutique, resulting in her being called to the Alberta Bar in 2019. In addition to appearing in various property, support, and parenting matters, Zolani was also involved in Emergency Protection Orders (EPO’s), child welfare, and Indigenous family law matters.

What characterizes her family law practice is her ability to relate with her clients on a personal level, while maintaining enough space to have frank and often difficult discussions about their legal rights and responsibilities. She is mediatory in her approach, and maintains respectable communication with opposing parties, so as not to add to the stress of the parties during a deeply emotional time in their lives. While Zolani has appeared successfully at the Alberta Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench (as it then was), she also frequently utilizes alternative dispute resolution processes, like mediation and arbitration, when appropriate and beneficial to her clients.

Zolani is an active member of the Calgary community. In addition to serving on boards and committees, including the City of Calgary Community Peace Office Oversight Committee and the Workers Resource Center, she also volunteers for causes close to my heart, like Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids and Center for Immigrant Women (CIWA). In her spare time, Zolani enjoys spending time with family, discovering new restaurants, and enjoying the arts.
